This is how the painting starts with a prepared canvas that has the metal leafing and stain applied over it...
Sometimes the painting on rice paper comes first...sometimes it is the prepared canvas that initiates the image to come... often the painting on rice paper is ripped apart in sections before it is applied on the canvas.
Here a new painting is coming along...with the torn apart bits of painting on rice paper and the stained tissue lying loosely on the surface of a white canvas
Here I am in the studio working a painting to illustrate a childrens' riddle..it shows how the painting comes together bit by bit, with painted areas or figures on the rice paper and the addition of the bits of stained papers (see papers at the botom left).

Detail of one of the illustrations for one of the riddles 'Why do little fish school?' The little cartoons are created on rice paper then applied to the canvas along with stained papers.
